Case Study

Stena Recycling AB

Stena Recycling AB operates a lithium-ion battery recycling plant partly engineered and commissioned by URT at their Battery Recycling Center in Halmstad, Sweden. The plant processes batteries at 2 t/h using thermomechanical treatment under inert conditions and features a unique electrically operated RTO exhaust gas treatment system, realised for the first time in this configuration.

Project Description

Stena Recycling AB operates a lithium-ion battery recycling plant partly engineered and commissioned by URT. The facility is part of the Battery Recycling Center (BRC) in Halmstad and is designed for the processing of lithium-ion batteries under industrial operating conditions.

The plant is configured for a processing capacity of 2 tonnes per hour. The process is based on thermomechanical treatment under inert conditions, including mechanical shredding and vacuum distillation drying, followed by defined material processing steps.

A key feature of this installation is the implementation of an electrically operated exhaust gas treatment system (RTO). This solution was realised for the first time in this configuration and reflects the availability of low-carbon electricity at the site.
