Toner Cartridges

We develop and build recycling plants for toner cartridges that enable the safe separation of toner powder within a closed, explosion protected process and the automated recovery of material fractions.
Core Objectives of Our Plants
Based on the EU Directive 2002/96/EC, toner cartridges must be removed from printers and copiers prior to treatment due to the health risks posed by toner dust. As many cartridges cannot be refilled due to their design or damage and are often either incinerated or processed in plants with insufficient explosion protection, URT has developed plant concepts that ensure the safe separation of toner powder from the remaining material fractions.
Mechanical Processing
Our in-house developed plant concept enables the automated extraction of toner powder from toner cartridges. The cartridges are fed individually via a feeding chute, transferred into the plant through an airlock system, and broken up in a shredding unit. A screening system then separates the toner powder from the cartridge components.
Explosion Protection
As toner dust is both hazardous and potentially explosive, URT introduces a mineral inerting agent during feeding and shredding, which immediately binds the toner powder and neutralizes the explosion risk. The resulting mixture is separated within the closed plant using screening technology and safely collected in a dedicated container. The effectiveness of this process has been validated by a European institute, and the method is patented by URT. Additional safety measures such as explosion venting, pressure-resistant design, and fire suppression systems provide further protection.
